Ensuring a safe sleep environment for babies is paramount for parents. SIDS and Kids Australia, committed to research and education on safe sleep practices, will hold their annual Red Nose Day on August 14th. This event aims to raise funds and awareness to achieve the ultimate goal of eliminating Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in babies.
Safe Sleep Tips from the Experts:
- Use a Safe Cot: Ensure the cot meets the current Australia Standard AS2172 for safety compliance.
- Opt for a Safe Mattress: Select a firm, clean, flat mattress of the right size for the cot, avoiding any tilting or elevation.
- Back to Sleep: Always place your baby on their back for sleeping.
- Uncover the Face: Keep your baby’s head and face uncovered during sleep.
- Feet at the Bottom: Position your baby’s feet at the bottom end of the cot to prevent sliding under covers.
- Secure Blankets: Tuck blankets in firmly or use a safe baby sleeping bag for cozy slumber.
- Smoke-Free Zone: Ensure a smoke-free environment for your baby’s health and safety.
- Breastfeeding Support: Breastfeeding can also contribute to reducing the risk of SIDS.
- Avoid Hazards: Do not use pillows, doonas, soft toys, cot bumpers, or lambswool in the cot, and avoid water beds or bean bags for sleeping.
Every Dollar Makes a Difference:
On August 14th, each dollar raised during Red Nose Day will support SIDS and Kids Australia’s lifesaving initiatives. Funds will provide crucial education and advice for new parents, expectant parents, and 24/7 grief support for families devastated by the unexpected loss of a child.
